Google began in 1996 as a project by Larry Page and Sergey Brin. Larry and Sergey were both studying at Stanford University California. In their research project they came up with a plan to make a search engine that ranked websites according to the number of other websites that linked to that site (and ultimately came up with the Google we have today). Before Google, search engines had ranked sites simply by the number of times the search term searched for appeared on the webpage, and the duo set out to make a more “aware” search engine. Do you remember your first time? Your first time listening to an MP3, i mean. For me it was a U2 song, leaked from the not-yet-released Pop album.
I had to install something called WinAmp to play it, it took forever to download on my crappy modem connection, and the song wasn’t that great.I didn’t realise it at the time, but i was listening to the future.
The rise of MP3 has been staggering. Amazingly, the portable MP3 player is just ten years old - and the MP3 format wasn’t even published until five years before that. But MP3’s world domination wasn’t guaranteed. In fact, the whole thing was nearly canned in 1991. So where did it come from, and how did it become such a big deal? Read the rest of this entry
The tradition of the New Year’s Resolutions goes all the way back to 153 B.C. Janus, a mythical king of early Rome was placed at the head of the calendar. With two faces, Janus could look back on past events and forward to the future. Janus became the ancient symbol for resolutions and many Romans looked for forgiveness from their enemies and also exchanged gifts before the beginning of each year.
The New Year has not always begun on January 1, and it doesn’t begin on that date everywhere today. It begins on that date only for cultures that use a 365-day solar calendar. January 1 became the beginning of the New Year in 46 B.C., when Julius Caesar developed a calendar that would more accurately reflect the seasons than previous calendars had. Like America itself, the jolly figure we call Santa Claus is a melting pot of cultures, blending elements of folklore with the fantastical.Santa Claus the man is actually loosely rooted in fact, though he hasn’t always looked the way he does today, having evolved from a gift-giving Catholic saint who lived during the third century.

Has anyone heard of Stanislav Petrov?
Probably not—but you may very well owe him your life. He is not a super hero or anything, but he is the man who saved the world from a disaster.
Petrov, a former member of the Soviet military, didn’t actually do anything but that’s precisely the point.
In 1983, Petrov held a very important station: As lieutenant colonel, he was in charge of monitoring the Soviet Union’s satellites over the United States, and watching for any sign of unauthorized military action.
This was the Cold War era, and suspicions were high; on September 1, the Soviet Union had mistakenly shot down a Korean aircraft it had believed to be a military plane, killing 269 civilians, including an American Congressman. The Soviet Union believed that the United States might launch a missile attack at any moment, and that they would be forced to respond with their own arsenal of nuclear weapons.
