Incredible footage has emerged of what a group of Russians claim is the remains of a dead alien. The video, which many viewers have dismissed as an elaborate hoax, was allegedly filmed near the town of Irkutsk close to Russia’s Lake Baikal in recent weeks.

The strange clip of the discovery has now been seen by nearly 1.5 million people in the two days since it was uploaded on April 17.The video was released after villagers in the area reported seeing bright orange lights in the sky last month with one witness capturing the mystery lights on his or her mobile phone. A computer simulation shows how invisible dark matter coalesces in halos (shown in yellow)Hunt may well be over for a mysterious and invisible substance that accounts for three-quarters of the matter in the universe. For 80 years, it has eluded the finest minds in science. But tonight it appeared that the hunt may be over for dark matter, the mysterious and invisible substance that accounts for three-quarters of the matter in the universe.

In a series of coordinated announcements at several US laboratories, researchers said they believed they had captured dark matter in a defunct iron ore mine half a mile underground. The claim, if confirmed next year, will rank as one the most spectacular discoveries in physics in the past century. Read the rest of this entry

Pliosaur catching a pterosaurDinosaur experts in Dorset are examining the fossilised skull of a sea monster so large they say it could have eaten a Tyrannosaurus rex for breakfast.

The fossil head is 2.4m (8ft) long, suggesting that the beast measured up to 16m (54ft) from the tip of its massive, crocodile-like snout to the end of its muscular tail, making it one of the largest specimens ever found.

The skull belongs to a pliosaur, one of a group of giant aquatic reptiles which roamed the warm seas over what is now southern Britain 150 million years ago.

It was spotted protruding from an unstable patch of cliff by Kevan Sheehan, a local fossil hunter, after being exposed by a rockfall. He spent four years going back day after day and painstakingly managed to uncover it. Read the rest of this entry

An artist's impression of COROT-7b, where pebbles fall as rainComputer models of COROT-7b, a planet orbiting an orange dwarf star in the constellation Monoceros, 490 light years away, suggest that the world has a surface temperature hot enough to boil rock.

The research, by scientists at Washington University in St Louis, Missouri, conjures up a vision of hell.
COROT-7b, a rocky planet around twice the size of the Earth but of similar density, is only 1.6 million miles from its star: 23 times closer than the innermost planet in our solar system, Mercury, is to the Sun.

This proximity means that the planet is gravitationally locked, like the Moon to the Earth, so that one side of the planet always faces the star.

So while its far side is in perpetual freezing darkness – around 50 degrees above absolute zero – its near side is a balmy 2,800C.
While scientists are not sure of the exact chemical makeup of the planet, the sheer temperatures mean that whatever it is, the rocky ground will boil, forming a mineral atmosphere. Read the rest of this entry

T-Rex at the Field Museum in Chicago known as Sue
Researchers have found that the undisputed king of the dinosaurs may have been ferocious killer, but it was susceptible to a bacterial infection that stopped it eating.

They believe the illness, which is similar to one that continues to affect eagles and hawks today, was so severe it would have led to a painful death from starvation.

The findings emerged after scientists re-examined holes in the jaws of one of the most famous dinosaur fossils ever unearthed, the 42 feet long, 13 feet high, T-Rex at the Field Museum in Chicago known as Sue.

Originally they thought the holes were battle scars from fights with rivals but the new investigation suggests she was felled by a lowly parasite that still afflicts modern birds. Read the rest of this entry

Water-ice on MarsNASA’s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO) has revealed sub-surface water ice that may be 99 percent pure, halfway between the North Pole and the equator on the Red Planet.

“We knew there was ice below the surface at high latitudes of Mars, but we find that it extends far closer to the equator than you would think, based on Mars’ climate today,” said Shane Byrne of the University of Arizona, a member of the High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment, or HiRISE, which runs the high-resolution camera on NASA’s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter. A team of scientists from the US Air Force Office of Scientific Research, led by Dr. Chunlei Guo, recently announced the development of a new method of treating metal, which involves tremendously intense bursts of laser. If a shiny piece of metal is bombarded with the laser pulses, it eventually changes its color to black, without the use of any dyes, and begins absorbing all radiations that are aimed at it. The innovation could open the way for the creation of new types of aircraft, the AFOSR scientists believe.

“With the creation of the black metal, an entirely new class of material[s] becomes available to us, which may open up a whole new horizon for various applications. To do this, we looked at the reverse process of light absorption or light radiation and Read the rest of this entry
